Unintended Pregnancy in the United States
Data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth supplemented by data from other sources provide the latest information on unintended pregnancy in the United States:
- 3.04 million unintended pregnancies occurred in 1994
- 48.0% of all pregnancies were unintended
- 47% of unintended pregnancies ended in abortion, 40% in birth, and 13% in miscarriage
- 53% of women with unintended pregnancies were using contraception
- Among those using contraception, 51% of unintended pregnancies ended in abortion, 37% in birth and 12% in miscarriage
- Among those not using contraception, 43% of unintended pregnancies ended in abortion, 44% in birth, and 13% in miscarriage
- 48% of women aged 15-44 have ever had an unintended pregnancy
- 60% of women aged 35-39 have ever had an unintended pregnancy
